Abstract

Annually China produces approximately 0.58 billion tonnes of swine manure. The great amount of manure wastes generated globally from the swine industry has caused serious environmental issues, especially diffuse pollution and the emission of greenhouse gases. Traditional composting is a common method for handling swine manure. However, the major disadvantage of this process is that nearly half of the carbon and nitrogen sources in manure wastes are lost as gaseous substances. The black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens L.), which can be used as feed, is able to use solid organic wastes as substrate. Bioconversion from swine manure into animal feed and fertilizer via black soldier fly larvae is a promising approach for manure recycling. There are rare reports about the design and application of automation equipment for black soldier fly composting swine manure. We designed an automation equipment for pilot-scale black soldier fly composting of swine manure. This equipment consists of a mechanical part and a control system. One unit of the mechanical part includes four layers fixed in a 2.5m high frame. The upper three layers are made of three grooves sized 10x1.8x0.35 m (length, width, height). The under layer is a conveyer belt for collecting and delivering maggots for composting. The three units consist of one entire production line sharing one manure delivery system and a composting collection system. There is one m interval between two adjacent units for discharging, but the conveyer belt is continuously delivering the maggots on the vibrating screen. The other key mechanical part are stirrer motors installed at the upper layer of the whole production line. Each of these motors has a scraper (1.8m long and 0.35m wide), which is horizontal when stirring and vertical when discharging. This stirrer motor move along two racks placed on the sides of the groove horizontally when stirring or discharging. The whole control system includes five parts: manure allocation one time and inoculation of the naive larvae (0.3-0.5g/100 larvae); stirring one time and manure allocation three times; manure allocation every six hours, if the temperature is higher than 42 and stirring; stirring every two hours, continued to one day; discharging on screen. With one production line (three units) of this automation equipment, about 3.24 tonnes raw swine manure (78% moisture) was decomposed thoroughly per day. One hundred fifty kg black soldier fly larvae was obtained from one tonne of piglet manure, and 120kg larvae from 1 tonne of hog manure, and 110-140 kg larvae from one tonne of sow manure.
